Biotic community and landscape changes around the Eocene–Oligocene transition at Shapaja, Peruvian Amazonia: Regional or global drivers?

چکیده

Since 2012, we have investigated a stratigraphic section encompassing the late Eocene–earliest Oligocene interval at Shapaja (Tarapoto area, Peruvian Amazonia, ca. 7°S), through paleontological and geological fieldwork. The measured sedimentary series (120 m-thick [West] plus 90 [East]), assigned to upper member of Pozo Formation, records fluvial micro-conglomeratic lenses intercalated with floodplain evaporite-rich fine red deposits, estuarine/coastal-plain tidally-influenced sandstones, oxbow lake nodule-rich blue clays. This shift coincides locally demise large Eocene coastal-plain wetland known as System. Eocene–early was extensively sampled for chemostratigraphy (?13C on dispersed organic matter pedogenic carbonate nodules), which in turn allowed refining location Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) other climatic events recognized global scale (i.e., Oi-1 Oi-1a). has yielded nine fossil localities plant remains (leaves, wood, charophytes, palynomorphs), mollusks, decapods, and/or vertebrates (selachians, actinopterygians, lungfishes, amphibians, sauropsids, mammals), documenting ~130 distinct taxa. Four Formation predate EOT, one is clearly within while four are earliest/early age. small leaf impressions found along could be indicative dry seasonal conditions this region throughout after EOT. Monkeys, tropical rainforest environments, only recorded latest locality (TAR-21). Two biotic turnovers perceptible selachian, metatherian, rodent communities, well before EOT [~35–36 Ma] few hundred thousand years [~33 Ma]. latter turnover seems primarily related sea-level drop (ichthyofauna: marine-littoral elements replaced by obligate freshwater taxa) onset drier more climate early times (terrestrial components). Changes structure paleocommunities were mostly driven flexural subsidence during Eocene, then globally earliest deterioration.

The Importance of Biotic vs. Abiotic Drivers of Local Plant Community Composition Along Regional Bioclimatic Gradients

We assessed if the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors for plant community composition differs along environmental gradients and between functional groups, and asked which implications this may have in a warmer and wetter future. The study location is a unique grid of sites spanning regional-scale temperature and precipitation gradients in boreal and alpine grasslands in southern ...

A regional study of Holocene climate change and human occupation in Peruvian Amazonia

Most palaeoecological research has focused on glacial– interglacial oscillations as the major climatic changes in Amazonia during the Quaternary (Haffer, 1969; Colinvaux et al., 2000; Pennington et al., 2000). Nevertheless accumulating data point to the importance of Holocene cycles of drought as a potent force shaping lowland communities. Servant et al. (1981) predicted the presence of a midHo...

Global changes in diet and activity patterns as drivers of the nutrition transition.

The nutrition transition relates to broad patterns of diet, activity and body composition that have defined our nutritional status in various stages of history. The world is rapidly shifting from a dietary period in which the higher income countries were dominated by patterns of nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NR-NCDs; while the lower and middle world were dominated by receding fam...

Regional-Scale Drivers of Forest Structure and Function in Northwestern Amazonia

Field studies in Amazonia have found a relationship at continental scales between soil fertility and broad trends in forest structure and function. Little is known at regional scales, however, about how discrete patterns in forest structure or functional attributes map onto underlying edaphic or geological patterns. We collected airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data and VSWIR (Visib...
